Nagarjuna is so named because according to ancient, local mythology it is believed that this is the location where Acharya Nagarjuna spent his time meditating. There is in fact a cave here which is named after him. Indeed, the hill is covered with such quiet and peaceful forests that this area is ideal for meditating. Many other ancient buddhas and gurus are said to have meditated in this place. The former royals of Nepal in fact built a summer palace in this place. It is also said that Manjushree, who drained the water out of the Kathmandu Valley to make it inhabitable, saw Kathmandu from this hill.
Nagarjuna, being a part of Shivapuri National Park, is located in the north-west region of Kathmandu. Your trip begins with about a half an hour’s drive to the entry gate of Nagarjuna. From there on you hike for about 3 hours through quiet, peaceful forests until you reach the top. Occasionally, you will get to see glimpses of Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayas. From the top of Nagarjuna hill (1920m), also formerly called Jamacho Peak, you can see a glorious view of Kathmandu Valley, Nuwakot, and Swayambhunath temple as well as the mountain ranges. You will also get to visit a famous buddhist stupa at the top. This is an ideal hike for anybody looking to get away from the noise and crowd of Kathmandu and spend some peaceful time doing a short, easy hike in the hills.
