Kalinchowk is primarily famous among the locals for Kalinchowk Bhagawati Temple. The temple was constructed as an abode for Goddess Bhagawati, who is believed to be the goddess who fulfils your desires and wishes. Therefore, many pilgrims flock to this temple every day to worship the goddess in hope of having their prayers answered.
Your trip begins with about 5 hours drive on the Araniko highway from Kathmandu to a place named Charikot (1550m). Situated in Dolkha district, which is in the eastern region of Nepal, this place is part of the Gaurishankar Conservation Area. Along the way, you will pass through two major rivers of Nepal: Sunkoshi River and Bhotekoshi River. Some people also combine this hike with white-water rafting in the Bhotekoshi River.
From Charikot, your hike begins. We will spend some time in Charikot to observe the culture and lifestyle of people living there. It is a multiethnic place, with people of various ethnicity (Sherpa, Tamang, Brahmins, Chhetris) all living together in peace and harmony. Then we will hike towards Kuri(3200m), which takes about 5 hours. All along the way, we will get to witness a plethora of natural beauty, local culture, and several species of birds and animals.
From Kuri, you will hike towards Kalinchowk Bhagawati Temple, which is on the top of the hill at an altitude of 3942m. It is a steep hike, but it will only take about an hour and a half. And when you reach the top, you will be rewarded with a very sacred temple as well as incredible sceneries of the Himalayas as well as Kathmandu City. For anyone who is looking for a short hike near Kathmandu that combines the beauty of nature along with an introduction to the local culture and religious practices, Kalinchowk offers a very good option.
Note: You can enjoy nearly 5-minute one-way cable car ride if you want.
